GTA6 vehicle system explained: fuel, car-theft tiers, garages and registration

GTA6's vehicle system has been overhauled. The details below are mostly from preview/demo reports, with Rockstar-confirmed items called out separately.
Fuel & charging
- Fuel cars need to refuel at gas stations; EVs plug into charging stations.
- In the shown build, refueling takes about 10 seconds, designed to be "deep but not annoying."
- Status: widely reported, not yet confirmed in an official Rockstar statement.
Car-theft tiers (luxury cars are harder)
- Regular cars can be broken into by smashing a window; expensive/luxury cars still need a digital key cloner and professional tools after breaking the window.
- These tools are not available at the start — you must unlock them via chop-shop / fence missions.
The Waink app (theft scanner)
Scanning a target vehicle shows:
- Alarm type
- Required theft tools
- GPS tracker level
- Vehicle value
- Registration / legalization cost
GPS trackers
- Some high-end stolen cars have trackers that silently alert the police if you drive too slowly — keep your speed up.
- Trackers come in tiers; completing more chop-shop missions unlocks removing higher-tier trackers.
Garages & storage
- You can buy garages to store stolen cars and clear records/trackers.
- Official explanation: you can't freely buy homes, because that wouldn't fit Jason and Lucia's "on the run" story.
- Trunk capacity varies by vehicle: motorbikes carry almost nothing, while large trucks can haul multiple bags of cash/loot.
Registration & legalization
- Waink shows the cost to register a stolen car as your personal vehicle.
- An unregistered stolen car can be hidden in a purchased garage until its tracker is removed and it's registered.
- Pay 'n' Spray returns: quick repair + repaint, which changes the vehicle description the police have on file.
Impounding & recovery
- If your personal car is linked to a crime, police may stake it out; leave it too long and it gets impounded — pay to reclaim it or steal it back.
- Damaged vehicles can be restored for a fee via Scooter Brothers.
Officially confirmed: nitrous
Nitrous boost has been officially confirmed.
New driving model
- Blends GTA4's weightiness with GTA5's accessibility.
- More realistic damage: blowouts cause loss of control / rollovers, with Burnout-style crash cameras.
- Denser traffic and narrower streets make high-speed getaways harder.
Except for nitrous and "no free home purchase," most details are from preview/demo reports and may change in the final game.
